The Goods

The good stuff
What is Gutsy?

Gutsy is a gut-friendly plant protein powder from the UAE, in two flavours: Vanilla Calm and Cacao Boost. Each scoop gives you 23g of hydrolysed pea and rice protein with 600mg of Actazin® kiwi extract, no gums, and under 1g of sugar. We made it because every plant protein we tried left us heavy and bloated.

Is Gutsy a meal replacement?

No. Gutsy is a protein shake, not a complete meal. It's built to sit alongside real food: after a workout, with breakfast, or as a mid-afternoon top-up when you're short on protein. If you're skipping meals, eat the meal.

Is 23g of protein per scoop enough?

For most people, yes. Pea and rice together make a complete plant protein with all nine essential amino acids, so one scoop does a proper job. If you train hard or have a high daily target, have two scoops across the day rather than one huge shake.

How many calories are in a Gutsy shake?

About 133 calories for Vanilla Calm and 138 for Cacao Boost, mixed with water. That's 23g of protein for well under 150 calories. Plant milk adds its own calories on top, so check your carton.

How much sugar is in Gutsy?

Under 1g of sugar per serving, with no added sugar. The sweetness comes from monk fruit, a fruit extract with no calories.

Does plant protein taste like plants?

Ours doesn't. Most plant proteins taste like a dusty field and use loads of sweetener to cover it. We use real cacao and natural vanilla, and the hydrolysed protein base tastes cleaner, without the beany aftertaste.

What's the difference between Vanilla Calm and Cacao Boost?

Same protein, same kiwi extract, same short ingredient list. Vanilla Calm uses natural vanilla and 300mg of reishi mushroom. Cacao Boost uses real cacao and 375mg of maca root. Pick by taste.

How much does Gutsy cost per shake?

A pouch is 15 servings. On subscription it's AED 199 a pouch, about AED 13.27 a shake, and AED 229 as a one-off.

How to Use It

Shake it up
How do I make a Gutsy shake?

One scoop, about 300ml of cold water or plant milk, shake for 10 to 15 seconds. It mixes without clumps, so you don't need a blender. Use a little less liquid if you like it thicker.

Should I mix it with water or milk?

Both work. Water keeps it light and lowest in calories. Oat, almond or coconut milk makes it creamier. With no gums in the powder, plant milk is the easy way to get a thicker shake.

When is the best time to have a protein shake?

Whenever it helps you hit your protein for the day. Plenty of people have Gutsy within an hour or two of training, but it works just as well with breakfast or as an afternoon snack. Your total protein across the day matters more than the exact minute.

How many scoops a day can I have?

One or two is typical. Gutsy is a top-up, so most of your protein should still come from food. Follow the serving on the label.

Can I cook or bake with it?

Yes. Stir it into overnight oats, yoghurt, pancakes or energy balls. It doesn't go gluey when warmed, so it works in porridge too. Add it after cooking rather than boiling it.

Can I add it to coffee?

Cacao Boost in an iced coffee is a good mocha. For hot coffee, mix the powder with a splash of cold milk first, then top up, so it doesn't clump.

How do I store it?

In the pouch, zipped shut, somewhere cool and dry below 25°C and out of direct sun. Best used within 2 months of opening. Not in a hot car in Dubai.

Your Gut

Trust your gut
Why do other protein powders make me feel bloated?

There are a few usual reasons. Many shakes use gums such as xanthan or guar to thicken them, which a lot of people find bloating. Whey can contain lactose. And big servings of tough-to-digest protein can sit heavy. Gutsy takes those out: hydrolysed protein, no gums, no dairy, no soy, plus kiwi extract.

What does hydrolysed protein mean?

Hydrolysed means the protein has been partly broken down before it's made into powder. Our pea and rice protein is hydrolysed, so your gut has less to do. It also makes the shake taste cleaner.

What's the kiwi extract for?

Every scoop has 600mg of Actazin®, a powder made from New Zealand green kiwifruit. Kiwi naturally contains actinidin, an enzyme that helps break down protein, and it supports regularity. More on the ingredients

Is plant protein easier to digest than whey?

It depends what bothers you. Whey comes from milk and can contain lactose, which many adults don't digest well, so if dairy doesn't agree with you, a plant protein is the easier swap. Gutsy is dairy free, lactose free and soy free. Everyone is different, though, so see how you feel.

Is Gutsy OK if I have IBS?

We left out the usual suspects: gums, dairy and soy. But IBS triggers are personal. If you have IBS or another medical condition, check with a doctor or dietitian who knows your history, and start with half a scoop.

Why no xanthan gum?

Gums make shakes thick and creamy, and they bloat a lot of people. We'd rather give you a slightly lighter shake. If you like it thick, use plant milk or blend it with a frozen banana.

Ingredients & Quality

Read the label
What's in Gutsy?

Seven ingredients: pea and rice protein, Actazin® kiwi extract, coconut milk, reishi (Vanilla Calm) or maca (Cacao Boost), natural vanilla or cacao, monk fruit and Himalayan pink salt. See what each one does

Is Gutsy a complete protein?

Yes. Pea protein and rice protein have different amino acid profiles, so together they cover all nine essential amino acids, the ones your body can't make itself.

Is Gutsy vegan, gluten free and dairy free?

Yes, all three. It's 100% vegan, gluten free, dairy free and soy free.

Does Gutsy contain allergens?

Gutsy is free from dairy, soy and gluten. It does contain coconut and pea, so skip it if either is a problem for you. Always check the label on your pouch for the full allergen statement.

Is Gutsy halal?

Gutsy isn't halal certified. It's 100% vegan, so there are no animal ingredients, and every ingredient is listed on the pouch and on our ingredients page.

Is Gutsy tested?

Yes. Gutsy is made in a GMP-certified facility and third-party tested, including for heavy metals, pathogens and sugar.

Can I have Gutsy if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

Check with your doctor first. Gutsy contains reishi or maca, and there's limited research on them in pregnancy, so it's a question for someone who knows your history.

Is Gutsy suitable for teenagers?

Gutsy is made for adults. For under-18s, food first, and check with a doctor before adding a protein supplement.

The Skeptics' Corner

Prove it
Is it really "natural"?

"Natural" means very little legally, so we'd rather be transparent: seven ingredients, what each one does, and what we test for. If something's in the pouch, it's on the label.

Why is Gutsy more expensive than a big tub of whey?

Hydrolysed plant protein, a proper dose of Actazin® and third-party testing cost more than bulk whey and gums. At about AED 13.27 a shake on subscription, we think a protein that doesn't leave you bloated is worth it. If you just want the cheapest protein per gram, we're honestly not it.

Why did it take 47 versions?

Because the first 46 weren't good enough. Some tasted like chalk, some still caused bloat, some wouldn't dissolve. It took more than a year to get one we actually wanted to drink. Read the story
